Casting vs. Spinning Fishing Rods

U.S. Army veteran Van Hipp is Chairman of American Defense International and author of “The New Terrorism: How to Fight It and Defeat It.” In his spare time, Van Hipp likes to fish.

When it comes to fishing, the type of rod used plays a critical role. There are two main types: casting and spinning rods, each with its strengths and weaknesses.

Casting rods have guides placed above the main shaft, a design approach that gives more precision. There are two main sub-types – spincasting and baitcasting rods. The main difference is in the size of the guides; spincasting models have larger guides. Trolling rods are a third type of casting rod, mainly used for deep-sea fishing and exceptionally large species.

Spinning rods are used with spinning reels and are considerably smaller than their casting counterparts. They have the guides attached to the bottom side of the rod, which makes them easier to use. Though mainly used for freshwater fishing, there are also larger models for saltwater fishing that can accommodate larger bait.
